PSHE
At Padstow School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos. British Values (BV) are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
PSHE education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that is a part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and to appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
The curriculum demonstrates appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to fulfil the duties of the Relationships Education, Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) and the Health Education (HE) guidelines whereby schools must provide a ‘balanced and broadly based curriculum promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and preparing them for the opportunities and responsibilities and experiences of later life.
INTENT
To build a PSHE curriculum which improves learning and develops the knowledge and skills for children to access the wider curriculum and preparing them to be a global citizen now, and in their future roles, within a global community. This curriculum to be accessible to all and to maximise outcomes for every child, so they know more, remember more and understand more.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Padstow School, we use the SCARF scheme of work which stands for:
Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship
SCARF is a whole-school approach to promoting behaviour, safety, achievement and wellbeing – crucial for children to achieve their best, academically and socially. It provides a strong, tangible framework; promoting a positive ethos and values throughout all lessons encouraging children to strive to achieve their best. It provides a heathy outlook towards life, promoting respect, caring attitudes and celebrating differences, providing a safe environment for children to be confident and successful learners.
In school, we aim to deliver a comprehensive curriculum following six units of study – each unit is revisited each year to enable a progression in skills, knowledge and understanding.

By applying SCARF across all year groups, progression in knowledge, attitudes, values and skills is embedded; including the key skills of social and emotional learning, known to improve outcomes for children. All learning activities used in SCARF allow opportunities for discussion and debate. Open learning activities provide an opportunity for pupils to develop their skills, knowledge and attitude.
Never underestimate the impact of children debating or discussing – even practising using language or talking about feelings can help them to develop key skills for the future.
Wider Curriculum
All subjects make a link to PSHE, BV, SMSC with a consistent use of language by all staff. Displays reinforce the PSHE curriculum enabling children to make links.
Assemblies – whole school, key stage and class assemblies always make a link to PSHE, British Values and SMSC.
Relationships and Sex Education
The programme for Relationships and Sex Education forms an important element of the Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education curriculum. It is carefully integrated to form part of the work on Growing and Changing, and develops from an understanding of families, growth from baby to child to adult, the different stages in a person’s life, to understanding the physical and emotional changes that take place during puberty. Most importantly, it focuses on the importance of trusting, caring relationships where respect and the rights of the individual form the basis of all healthy relationships.
The SCARF programme provides a structured curriculum for the teaching of relationships and sex education appropriate to children’s age and stage of development. Parents / guardians are welcome to discuss this programme more fully and should contact the school for further information if required. Legally, parents / guardians are also permitted to withdraw their child(ren) from these lessons, though we do urge parents to discuss this with the school prior to doing so.
